How to Use the Random Team Generator
Type or paste participant names into the text field. One name per line. Choose your split method: by number of teams, or by team size. Enter your number. Click Generate Teams.
The tool shuffles all names using a cryptographically random algorithm and distributes them into balanced teams. Results appear as labeled cards with each team's members listed below.
Copy all teams with one click. The output lists every team by number with all assigned members. Paste it into a message, an email, or a shared document.
Generate again for a completely different assignment. Each generation is independent. No name has a higher probability of landing on any specific team.
By number of teams creates as many teams as you specify and distributes names as evenly as possible. 20 names into 4 teams gives you 4 teams of 5.
By team size creates as many teams as the names allow at your chosen size. 22 names at 5 per team gives you 4 full teams of 5, with 2 players added to make a fifth smaller team.
How Teams Are Balanced
The tool first shuffles all names using the Fisher-Yates algorithm with crypto.getRandomValues(). Then it distributes the shuffled names sequentially into teams.
This means the distribution is not just random — it is also as balanced as possible. The tool never leaves one team dramatically larger than another unless the numbers require it.
When names do not divide evenly, extra participants are distributed to earlier teams one by one. For example, 11 names into 3 teams creates teams of 4, 4, and 3, not teams of 5, 5, and 1.
This is the standard approach used in physical education, corporate training programs, and competitive event management.
Common Uses for a Random Team Generator
Physical education and sports. PE teachers and coaches paste their class roster and split it into teams for games, drills, and scrimmages. Random team assignment prevents friend clustering and gives different players experience playing together.
Classroom group projects. Teachers split students into project groups without the social dynamics of student self-selection. Random assignment also exposes students to peers they might not choose to work with, which builds social skills.

Why Random Teams Are Fairer Than Picked Teams
When people pick their own teams, social dynamics drive the selection. Popular students get picked first. Less socially prominent students get picked last. This is well-documented in educational research and is actively harmful to student confidence and belonging.
Even when an authority figure picks teams, unconscious bias influences the choices. Teachers and coaches tend to group students they perceive as similar. This reduces diversity within teams and limits cross-group interaction.
Random assignment removes these biases entirely. The algorithm has no opinion about any participant. Every distribution is equally probable. The result feels fair to participants because no person made the choice.
Research in team effectiveness consistently shows that groups formed from different social clusters outperform groups formed from pre-existing cliques. The discomfort of working with unfamiliar people drives more communication, more creative problem-solving, and better outcomes.
Tips for Better Team Generation
Use consistent name formatting. "John Smith" and "john smith" are treated as different entries. Use one consistent format across the whole list.
Remove blank lines before generating. Blank lines create phantom blank participants that appear in team assignments.
For large groups, by-team-size mode gives you more control over the experience. Setting 5 per team ensures every group is small enough for everyone to participate actively.
Generate 2 or 3 times and let participants vote on which assignment to use. This adds a small element of group input while keeping the actual assignment random. You can also pair this with the List Randomizer for pre-shuffling.
